Berberine hydrochloride is mainly used as a raw material for intestinal infections caused by sensitive pathogens such as gastroenteritis and bacterial dysentery.An isoqinoline alkaloid shown to have a chemopreventive property against colon tumor formation by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2) which is abundantly expressed in colon cancer cells. Al so inhibits Activator Protein 1 (AP-1), a transcription factor that plays a critical role in inflammation and carcinogenesis.
